Last weekend there were lots of social protests in many cities of different countries provoked by a US online movement “Occupy Wall Street” in social media in this May. The original motive of this movement is to protest what those greedy banks have done in global finance market and how government took taxpayer money for the bailout funding on these finance disasters..
On 17 September, hundreds of young and frustrated people gathered in the corner of Wall Street, New York, but never attracted eyes of mainstream media. Starting from that time, this movement gradually gets lots of support from labor union, students, the jobless educated, and bourgeois… not only in New York, US, but also initiated similar activities in many US cities within few weeks. Even on 15 October, there were similar protest activities in hundreds of cities around the world with the similar slogan “Occupy XXX”, “We are the 99%” in Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin, Frankfort, Manila, Athena, Taipei, Seoul, Bucharest, Sarajevo, Stockholm, Zurich and Sidney…etc.
Many sociologists said this phenomenon is the global version of “Arab Spring”. Why? This movement, as you closely observe it, is quickly mobilized by young people within a very short time, and there is no significant figure or groups leading these activities as well as clear agenda, because everything, from ideology forming to action taking, is all through social media and SMS abruptly. This situation is quite similar to those uprisings just happened in Arab countries.
Government and law enforcement agencies are certainly nervous about the trend of this situation with the duty to maintain social stability and economic development. In some countries, government agencies have started to collect online information from target blogs, BBS, websites in order to understand civil opinions on what government has done. This information is a very important reference for administration, because it reflects different viewpoints from different social walks.
On the other side, LEA officers also pay high attention to the happening of movement, because there are always lots of riots happening without clear leading figures and groups just like what happened in London in this Aug.
“The best way to reduce civil complaints against government” said Casper, CEO of Decision Group “is to collect civil voices by all means from media. Internet is a very important media for citizens to post their own comment and idea for nobody can dominate and control it.” So, how to effectively collect such information and conduct analysis is very important for government officers in order to respond it properly. In the mean time, LEA officers also need to monitor those online activities in the movement in order to closely observe the situation and prevent from any violence.
